Thomas de Boer (29) is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Rotterdam (NL) working as a director, director of photography, editor, and videographer.
As a filmmaker, he currently focuses on the effects of digital culture on social and political issues. Our contemporary digital culture allows for widely different perceptions of reality which produces many societal complications. In his work, he aims to uncover digital media elements that aid this dynamic. How do things like image compression, comment sections, and echo chambers mediate our communication and consumption of information? He questions this through cinematic means, by translating mechanisms and speculating on implications within the medium of film. Using non-narrative and fictional elements with more familiar imagery to engage the spectator’s gaze consciously, he invites the audience into the sense-making process of his work.
